This course offers a general, gentle introduction to sailing and teaches basic boat handling, seamanship, helming and safety skills.Whether you are new to yachting or have a bit more experience and are looking for a certification, the RYA Competent Crew course could well be the training you need. This is a course for beginners and those who would like to become active crew members rather than just passengers.
By the end of the course you should be able to steer, handle sails, keep a lookout, row a dinghy and assist in all the day to day duties on board. Your experience will also include living and sleeping onboard and understanding everything that needs to be done to run a boat.
There is no formal external assessment or exam for the RYA Competent Crew course. Certification is attributed by your instructor upon covering the requirements.
While our 5 day sailing course will equip students with all the necessary safety skills and build confidence in crewing techniques, it is also largely about having fun, visiting some interesting places and having a bit of a holiday.

Prerequisites
This is a beginner's course thus there is no assumed knowledge or pre-course experience required.
Minimum age for all our courses is 12 years old. All underaged need to be accompanied by a parent or guardian at all times.
To reach certification you will need a minimum of 5 days sailing. It can be organized in 5 consecutive days or 2 weekends (2 days + 3 days which would mean 1 weekend plus a long 3 day weekend: Friday to Sunday or Saturday to Monday).
If you have completed "Start Yachting" befor, you can reach RYA Competent Crew level and certification with 3 additional cruising days.

Oeiras Yachting Harbor offers access to an outstanding water plan. It offers modern infrastructure with restaurants, shops, showers, parking and boatyard all in a stunning location between Lisbon and Cascais.Around the marina, you will find several high quality beaches, and ocean swimming-pool and a cycle path by the water.
Its strategic location at the mouth of the river Tagus allows you to experience the Atlantic or otherwise look for the more protected and tidal waters of the river.
It's proximity to Cascais and Lisbon (about 6nm each) as well as the quick exit towards the south for destinations like Sesimbra are also a solid advantage.

Important Notes
All prices include fuel, marina costs and acomodation onboard when applicable. Includes the usage of all the safety gear, bed clothing, and food when applicable (breakfasts, lunches and 3 dinners on board). The boat will be supplied on your arrival. A free book "RYA Sail Cruising and Yachtmaster Sheme" is included in the premium option. If you wish to make use of the Helly Hansen wet weather gear you have to book in advance at a cost o 19,50 euros per 5 days or 6 euros per day. West Coast holds all the required insurances for this type of activity. Nevertheless, we strongly recommend that you hold or buy your own travel insurance adequate to your specific needs. For example, in insurance that covers cancelation costs, theft, disease and that does not exclude recrational sailing is highly advised. It is not included in the price: meals ashore, books you may need, transfer to and from the airport or the city centre (but we can help with booking a taxi or organising a transfer for your group).
